The design and build expert Darwin Group has delivered an On-Demand facility for James Paget Trust, improving patient flow by relocating orthopaedic outpatient services next to the existing centre

James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has opened its new Orthopaedic Outpatient Centre.

The facility was built by construction partner Darwin Group.

The new facility, designed and delivered as part of Darwin Group’s On-Demand (registered trademark) Healthcare range, welcomed its first patients on Friday 23rd May 2025.

The Trust commissioned the project to support a wider reconfiguration of its urgent and emergency care services.

In order to develop a new same day emergency care (SDEC) unit adjacent to the hospital’s Emergency Department (ED), the Trust needed to relocate its existing orthopaedic outpatient services, including the Fracture Clinic, which previously occupied that critical space.

Darwin Group provided a fast-track, hireable On-Demand solution, delivering a modern outpatient facility comprising nine consultation and examination rooms, four updated plaster bays, improved office accommodation, and staff welfare areas.

The new outpatient centre is situated alongside the existing Orthopaedic Centre, a permanent facility also delivered by Darwin Group earlier this year.

This development consolidates the Trust’s orthopaedic services within a dedicated campus, streamlining patient pathways and enhancing operational resilience.

Nick Dawe, Managing Director at Darwin Group, said: “In [co-locating its orthopaedic facilities], we have provided a solution allowing the current space inside the hospital to be refurbished into an SDEC unit.

“The Trust’s approach of seamlessly integrating both permanent and On-Demand solutions from Darwin Group demonstrates healthcare estate flexibility and a commitment to future resilience. On-Demand healthcare facilities are solutions fit for modern medicine, providing relief to changing needs and supporting future adaptability as requirements evolve.”

Charlotte Dillaway, Chief Operating Officer at James Paget University Hospital, said:  “The completion of the new centre means that, for the first time, the James Paget has brand new orthopaedic facilities, including a hi-tech operating theatres building and a modern ward with en-suite single rooms, which are all located next to each other, for the benefit of our patients.

“Its creation also frees up space in the main hospital building, which we will now use to develop our same-day emergency care services. This will help us see patients arriving at our Emergency Department more quickly and prevent unnecessary admissions, reducing pressure on our bed capacity.”

The project underlines the growing role of modular and On-Demand healthcare facilities in supporting NHS Trusts to respond flexibly to evolving service demands, estate constraints, and patient care priorities.
