Morgan Sindall Construction has completed the Oak Wards expansion at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The project, delivered by Morgan Sindall’s Northern Home Counties business through the Pagabo Major Works Framework, comprises two new 24-bed wards linked directly to the hospital’s emergency department via a new corridor connection.
The two-storey development includes five-bed bays, single patient bedrooms, clinical support spaces, staff facilities, ward kitchens and offices.
The internal layout has been designed around a central nurse station and reflects the configuration of existing wards within the hospital estate.
The new facility has been developed to accommodate patients with frailty, dementia and complex healthcare needs as Milton Keynes University Hospital responds to increasing demand driven by population growth across the region.
Oak Wards officially opened following the admission of its first patients earlier this month.
The scheme forms part of a wider programme of healthcare investment at the hospital campus, where Morgan Sindall is also delivering a new imaging centre and recently completed a radiotherapy centre.
Sustainability measures incorporated into the project include roof-mounted air source heat pumps, improved building fabric performance and sustainable drainage features such as swales and rain gardens.
External landscaping works also included tree planting, wildflower areas and biodiversity enhancements.
Morgan Sindall said carbon reductions were achieved during construction through design changes including the use of a reinforced concrete structural frame and reduced concrete volumes within foundations.
“The completion of Oak Wards marks another important milestone in our ongoing relationship with Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust,” said Emma Curtis, Area Director for Morgan Sindall Construction in the Northern Home Counties.
