Kier tops out on mental health hospital on Sussex Coast

A topping out ceremony has been held on the site of the new "campus-style" Combe Valley Hospital being built by Kier Construction

Kier, a UK-based construction company, has topped out on the new Combe Valley Hospital, part of Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT).

It replaces outdated facilities at the Department of Psychiatry in Eastbourne and is expected to be completed towards the end of 2025.

The 'campus'-style approach will enable the Trust to develop a leading centre for mental health services and better meet the changing needs of local people and achieve outstanding outcomes for patients.

The new mental health facility will include a 54-bed hospital

The new mental health facility will include a 54-bed hospital consisting of three 18-bed wards for adults of working age and older people, all with individual bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms.

Furthermore, the new hospital will also:

  • Remove outdated dormitory accommodation, replacing the shared wards with individual bedrooms, each with ensuite bathrooms
  • Provide a modern and improved therapeutic environment for patients, and create enough capacity to meet future inpatient needs.

This represents the first step in a wider programme aimed at building new modern facilities on a single site which will, in the future, meet all mental health inpatient needs for the people of East Sussex and beyond.

Kier Regional Director, Cheryl Parsons, said: “We have worked closely with the Trust and patients to deliver the best facilities for recovery, using our technical expertise to create solutions to better support patients, as well as delivering a step-change in terms of the environmental sustainability of the building.”

SPFT Chief Executive, Dr Jane Padmore added: "This new hospital not only enables us to further improve the care we provide to the communities we serve, but also to recruit and retain the best people. Vitally, the hospital is being developed in partnership with people who use, or have used our services in the past, to make sure the facilities are fully co-produced at every stage."
