Brandon Medical will host a free specialist webinar on 21 May, offering practical insight into how NHS operating theatres can support the national drive toward Net Zero—while improving efficiency and cost control.
Titled Innovating Inside the OR: SMART Theatres for a Net-Zero NHS, the session will be led by Richard McAuley, National Specification Manager at Brandon Medical, and is designed for estates, sustainability and capital project teams working in NHS and independent healthcare environments.
From high energy use to high performance
Operating theatres are among the most energy-intensive spaces in any hospital. The webinar will explore how adopting Brandon Medical’s SMART operating theatre principles can lead to significant environmental and operational gains without requiring full refurbishments or large-scale capital projects.
Key areas of focus will include:
- Using intelligent standby systems to reduce unnecessary power consumption
- Retrofitting existing clinical infrastructure with energy-aware technologies
- Lessons from Trusts already implementing SMART strategies
- Aligning upgrades with NHS procurement and sustainability frameworks
McAuley explains:
“In many cases, greener theatre spaces can be achieved through smarter integration of existing systems. Our SMART philosophy—standardisation, modularity, adaptability, reliability, and technology—offers a pathway to sustainable operating environments, even under current budget pressures.”

British design, European investment
Brandon Medical remains a UK manufacturer with a legacy of innovation in surgical and critical care environments. Its SMART Operating Theatres concept brings together digital integration, infrastructure design, and clinical insight to deliver intelligent, future-ready healthcare spaces.
Since joining the Reinsberg Group—an alliance of European medical manufacturers focused on scaling innovation—Brandon Medical has expanded its investment in UK R&D and manufacturing. This backing has enabled a new wave of design initiatives, including developments in low-energy infrastructure and high-efficiency production techniques at its Leeds facility.
“We are proud to retain our British roots while being part of a wider effort to strengthen Europe’s role in global healthcare innovation,” says McAuley.
