10 practices to pilot new system this spring

Optometrists in Wales will soon be able to send electronic referrals directly to hospitals.

Ten practices are taking part in a pilot of the new service this spring.

It allows optometrists to log on to the Welsh Clinical Communications Gateway currently used by GP practices to send e-referrals to secondary care.

The benefits of the service to optometrists are that it will be quicker and more cost effective than paper referrals, and the optometry practice will receive notification from the hospital to confirm patient referrals have been received.
