Advancing orthopaedic care Dame Clare Marx Building

The Dame Clare Marx Building at Colchester Hospital is a cutting-edge Elective Orthopaedic Centre featuring eight operating theatres, three wards with 72 inpatient beds, and supporting spaces. Designed to serve up to 10,000 patients annually, this facility reduces waiting times and improves patient outcomes for elective orthopaedic procedures across East Suffolk and North Essex. MTX, a leader in modern construction, was a key partner in delivering this state-of-the-art healthcare hub.

Engineering excellence in healthcare

DSSR collaborated closely with MTX and other project partners to design and implement the mechanical and electrical services. Our responsibilities included heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical systems, plumbing, fire safety, and medical gas systems. To ensure seamless integration and compliance with industry regulations, we adhered to stringent Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs) and building standards.

Sustainability at the core

The project prioritised sustainability by employing an all-electric energy strategy, high-performance HVAC systems, LED lighting, and water-saving fixtures. These initiatives reduced the facility's environmental footprint while enhancing operational efficiency. Designed to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating, the building embodies sustainable healthcare design, integrating eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient systems to minimise its reliance on fossil fuels.

Modern methods of construction

The Dame Clare Marx Building exemplifies the success of hybrid construction, blending traditional techniques with modular, modern methods. MTX’s expertise in modular construction enabled faster, safer, greener, and more cost-effective delivery. This collaborative approach, alongside DSSR’s innovative engineering solutions, has resulted in one of Europe’s largest and most advanced orthopaedic facilities, setting a new benchmark in healthcare construction.
