Sustainability in healthcare services is not just 'nice to have', but can make a powerful contribution to profit and operational delivery, according to construction giant, Carillion.
The company has recently released its annual Sustainability Report , which sets six objectives around environmental, social and economic responsibility. They include sections on supporting local communities, enabling low-carbon economies, and protecting the environment.
Our report demonstrates that sustainability can make a powerful contribution to profit as well as operational delivery and it creates real benefits for the communities in which we work
Richard Howson, chief executive of Carillion said sustainability is a vital ingredient for business success in today’s challenging markets.
Speaking at the launch of the report, he added: "Surprisingly we still hear discussions that sustainability is either a ‘nice to have’ or, worse, something that companies can’t afford, but this misses the point. Our report demonstrates that sustainability can make a powerful contribution to profit as well as operational delivery and it creates real benefits for the communities in which we work.
“Done well, with commitment right across an organisation and the support of extended partnerships with clients and suppliers, sustainability makes a clear contribution to the bottom line. Becoming a more-sustainable business goes hand-in-hand with becoming a more-successful business."

The report provides an update on progress against Carillion's 2020 Sustainability Strategy, which was launched in 2011.
David Picton, Carillion’s chief sustainability officer, said: “Our 2013 report tracks how we are doing against our very ambitious targets, restates our future goals, and brings to life inspiring case studies from our international operations."
He added: "We are proud to have been recognised as one of the top 10 companies in the UK for climate leadership, and to have won last year’s Building Public Trust Award. For an international company, sustainability is a global issue and local, regional and national governments rightly expected us to prove our credentials.
"Responsible companies have sustainable practices at the heart of their activities and their mindset, and then demonstrate these with clear measures. We have a commitment from board level down through the company to deliver a balanced agenda of net positive outcomes.”
