Transitioning away from fossil fuel-based heating systems to sustainable alternatives is no longer optional but a necessity explains Graham Smith, Commercial Director UK&I, Carrier Commercial HVAC

As Europe intensifies its efforts to combat climate change, the decarbonisation of commercial properties remains a challenge. Transitioning away from fossil fuel-based heating systems to sustainable alternatives is no longer optional but a necessity explains Graham Smith, Commercial Director UK&I, Carrier Commercial HVAC.

It’s time to decarbonise

The urgency of the decarbonisation challenge cannot be overstated. Buildings account for just over a third of global energy-related carbon emissions, making innovative HVAC solutions essential to achieving climate targets.

With the launch of our brand new AquaSnap® 61AQ high-temperature air source reversible heat pump, we are not only rising to the challenge of decarbonisation but leading the way as we provide our customers with high-performance, sustainable HVAC solutions, designed to meet the demands of a net zero future.

Replacing fossil fuels with intelligent, energy-efficient solutions

It’s in Carrier’s DNA to be a leader, not a follower. Whenever we launch a new product, we need to present a solution that adds value for our customers. The development of the AquaSnap® 61AQ was driven by the pressing need to offer a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuel-based heating systems.

A key driver of decarbonisation is replacing traditional gas boilers with advanced heat pump technologies. The AquaSnap® 61AQ offers a viable, high-performance alternative capable of meeting the rigorous demands of extreme climates. Unlike hybrid systems, which rely on supplementary fossil fuel heating, the AquaSnap® 61AQ offers building owners the ability to replace gas boilers outright; even those customers in Scandinavia and Central Europe who may experience outdoor temperatures as low as -25°C.

Our approach to developing this product was deliberate and meticulous. We focused on creating a solution that ensures long-term reliability, high temperature, best in class efficiency, and adaptability. Our extensive testing over two years in various laboratory conditions validated the AquaSnap® 61AQ’s performance.

The AquaSnap® 61AQ’s modular design further enhances its appeal, allowing it to be configured to specific customer needs. Multiple units can be installed in series to deliver a higher capacity while maintaining a compact footprint. This scalability ensures the AquaSnap® 61AQ can support projects of varying sizes, from single-building applications to district heating networks.

Driving decarbonisation through natural refrigerants

As Europe accelerates its decarbonisation goals, the adoption of R-290 was not an option; it was an absolute necessity for us. With a nearly zero Global Warming Potential (GWP) and the absence of harmful byproducts like PFAS, R-290 offers long-term sustainability, improved efficiency, and high operational performance to reach temperatures of up to 75°C.

Our research and development enabled us to create an advanced compressor specifically optimised for R-290 to deliver a heat pump that is 15-20% more efficient than previous models. The design also allows the 61AQ to exceed Eco-design requirements by up to 30%.

It’s not just the compressor, all of the components have been carefully thought through from the fans to the water resistance of any electrical component, and even the product’s modularity.

The scalability of this new heat pump can cater to diverse applications, from small commercial properties to large industrial complexes. Available in capacities ranging from 40kW to 140kW module. Customers could then choose to install four 140kW modules to provide a 560kW solution and then they can put in parallel as many 560kW units as they need, with the appropriate control system.

Integrating digital connectivity and smart control systems

In an increasingly connected world, digital innovation is essential for modern HVAC solutions. The AquaSnap® 61AQ features an advanced smart control system SmartVu, specifically designed to enhance user experience. Reliable and easy to operate, this smart piece of technology helps to get the best performance and efficiency of the unit.

Customers, or Carrier engineers if the customer has a Carrier service plan, have access to real-time data which allows constant monitoring and predictive maintenance. Technicians can diagnose and address potential issues remotely, ensuring minimal downtime and long-term reliability. The controls also allow customers to make informed decisions and optimise their system’s performance based on real-time conditions.

Empowering the future

The AquaSnap® 61AQ represents a bold step forward in the journey to decarbonise Europe’s commercial and industrial properties. From its adoption of natural refrigerants to enhanced energy efficiency, high temperature and advanced digital capabilities, the AquaSnap® 61AQ embodies Carrier’s dedication to sustainability, innovation and customer empowerment.

Carrier’s approach to product development, prioritising performance and reliability, ensures that the AquaSnap® 61AQ is more than just a heat pump; it’s an intelligent building solution for a more sustainable future.

As the call for decarbonisation intensifies, Carrier remains at the forefront, ready to support customers in their transition to cleaner, smarter and more efficient building solutions.
