Bupa’s Cromwell Hospital expands to increase patient capacity and improve sustainability

Cromwell Hospital has opened an expansion of its healthcare facility that aligns with net-zero goals

Cromwell Hospital has officially opened a major new extension into the adjoining Lexham Gardens building.

The expansion offers sustainable healthcare facilities, new clinical departments, upgraded technology, and improved environments for both patients and staff.

“We’ve been on a journey over the last few years to introduce the latest innovative treatments, technology and modernise spaces for patients and staff,” said Philip Luce, CEO of Diagnostics and Secondary Care London. “The new extension showcases our commitment to this and I’m excited to welcome patients through the doors.”

The 33,000 sqft development increases patient capacity, experience and supports the delivery of cutting-edge care for communities across London and beyond.

The expansion, revealed on 2 December, forms part of Bupa’s long-term investment strategy in modern, sustainable healthcare facilities.

It will bring new clinical departments, upgraded technology, and improved environments for both patients and staff.

The extension aligns with Bupa’s ambition to reach net-zero by 2024. The building received an excellent rating from BREEAM.

The new energy-efficient technologies in the facility will help to reduce carbon emissions and support more environmentally responsible clinical operations.

Features of the expanded facility

The new facility includes a new therapies department with a dedicated occupational therapy suite, a specialist children’s therapy zone with a sensory room and fully equipped rehabilitation gym.

It also adds an additional operating theatre to the facility, one which includes robotic and minimally invasive surgical techniques to support faster patient recoveries and reduce discomfort.

There is also a chemotherapy day unit, which offers private, calming spaces for patients to receive treatment.

Along with this, an upgraded Radiology department with new X-rays, fluoroscopy, ultrasound and DEXA technologies to improve diagnostics and streamline patient pathways.

The expanded facility also now includes a 10-bed recovery department and two cath labs to help bolster capacity for advanced cardiac diagnostics and interventions.

Other recent Cromwell green innovations

The recent expansion at Cromwell Hospital is just one of the many steps that Bupa has taken to modernise and green its operations.

In 2018, Bupa partnered with IMS MAXIMS to extend deployment of an electronic order communications and results-reporting system at Cromwell.

The digital system allowed clinicians to request and view radiology and pathology test results instantly, avoid delays and transcription-errors, and reduce inefficiencies that existed with a paper-based workflow.

In 2023, it became the first private hospital in the UK to sign a five-year deal with SageTech Medical to install SID-Dock devices in operating theatres.

The devices capture waste anaesthetic gases that would otherwise be released unused into the atmosphere.

The gas captured is stored and sent for purification, then recycled back into pharmaceuticals.

It is estimated that without the device, over 160 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions (t/CO2e) would be produced each year across the hospital’s operating theatres, which is the same as driving 720,000 miles in a petrol car.
