Since April 2024, the Trust has implemented enhanced waste segregation options designed to make recycling more accessible for staff, patients, and visitors.
As a result, the organisation has increased its recycling rates by 32%, reduced CO₂ emissions by 500 tonnes, and cut waste disposal costs by 25%.
The Trust’s waste management team was recognised for its efforts at the Healthcare Supply Association (HCSA) national conference, receiving a ‘Highly Commended’ award in the Sustainability/Social Value category.
Beyond recycling, Barts Health NHS Trust continues to deliver a range of innovative sustainability projects.

Most recently, it secured over £600,000 in grant funding through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) and Low Carbon Skills Fund.
This funding will support the Trust’s heat decarbonisation strategy and the development of a digital twin for its estate — a virtual model to optimise energy use across its sites.
As part of this programme, Mile End Hospital is set to install 393 new solar panels in a landmark project aimed at reducing energy costs and lowering the site’s environmental impact.

Other ongoing initiatives include the re-launch of the Trust’s return and reuse walking aid scheme, regular donations of unwanted items to local charities, and a variety of active travel schemes encouraging staff to integrate walking, cycling, and public transport into their commutes.
These measures collectively aim to minimise landfill waste and support healthier, more sustainable lifestyles for staff and the wider community.
