Addenbrooke's installs art in lift lobby

A LIFT lobby at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge is looking a lot brighter following the installation of artworks. The four large pieces by Raphael Daden consist of different-coloured acrylic lit from within. They were commissioned as part of the development of the new intensive care unit at Addenbrooke's. The project was funded by the Percent for Art scheme, which diverts a small amount of money from building projects into artwork as part of the planning permission process. Raphael drew inspiration from his works from the flow of water from Nine Wells into Cambridge along Hobson's Conduit. He said: "I want people to be able to stop for a moment in this busy environment and be absorbed into the work, using light, colour and patterns from the natural world." Along with Raphael's artworks, a number of other improvements are being carried out including redecoration of the staircase; the hanging of new paintings by local artist, Jo Tunmer, and the installation of glass art by Charlotte Garrard in the doors of the new intensive care and high dependency units. All the works are expected to be completed by Christmas.
