A new £18m endoscopy unit, funded through the New Hospitals Programme, has been delivered by Henry Brothers Construction at Leicester General Hospital.
“As part of the new unit, we have used digital solutions to replace paper forms, allowing our clinical teams to have more time to care for patients,” said Rachael Briggs, Associate Director of Operations at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.
The facility features six procedure rooms and 20 private patient pods, each with en-suite facilities that are designed to provide comfort and privacy before and after procedures.
Briggs described the new facility as bright, open, and modern. She said that this will make a big difference to those working there and visiting.
Patients are already being seen at the facility, and the new unit will allow for an additional 9,000 patients a year to be seen.
The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and project team placed strong emphasis on creating a therapeutic and efficient environment.
Work on the single-storey unit began in March 2024 and was supported by:
- Project Manager: Selcon
- Quantity Surveyor: Rider Levett Bucknall
- Principal Designer: Stephen George & Partners
- Architect: P+HS Architects
- Structural Engineer: Curtins
- M&E Engineer: CPW
“The new endoscopy unit is a fantastic example of how well-designed environments can enhance both patient experience and staff wellbeing,” said James Almond, Managing Director of P+HS Architects.
Earlier this year, Henry Brothers Construction began work on a separate endoscopy unit at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust’s Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.
In March, the firm held a topping out ceremony for Leicester Hospital’s endoscopy unit to celebrate a milestone in the £12m redevelopment, which is scheduled for completion in early 2026.
