Work is underway to expand a breast unit to enable Worcestershire Royal Hospital to double the number of women accessing screening and treatment.
Speller Metcalfe has begun work on the £1.84m construction programme, with the site to be expanded by more than two thirds.
Designed by Pinnegar Hayward Architects, the work will involve the development of a new single-storey extension which will enable weekend breast screening services, helping to reduce waiting times.
Tom Potts, directorate manager for breast services at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “The new breast unit extension will bring state-of-the-art breast imaging facilities to Worcestershire and use the latest imaging technology.”
James Speller, pre-construction director at Speller Metcalfe, adds: “Following numerous years of experience in delivering NHS schemes, we will be working to both strict COVID-19 health and safety measures and doing everything we can to minimise impact on patients, staff and visitors to the hospital over the coming months.”
The work is expected to be completed in the autumn.
