The Water Hygiene Centre, a UK-based independent water hygiene & Legionella consultant, has added two new members to its team.
Andy Clews, Senior Consultant, alongside Marian Baltaru, who is joining its Legionella risk assessment team.

Clews is joining The Water Hygiene Centre from the University of Warwick, where he dedicated over 21 years in roles such as Mechanical Services Design Engineer, Water Hygiene Manager, and most recently, Maintenance Engineering Surveyor (incorporating the Water Hygiene Manager responsibilities) specialising in Water System Compliance.
Clews's responsibilities at the university included:
- Design and installation of new build and refurbishment projects - having the responsibility as Water Hygiene Manager and Authorised Person, Clewsensured the Estates Operations Team had the correct asset information to deliver the required ppm’s, along with being responsible for signing certificates of conformity with permits to occupy a variety of facilities, including libraries, student accommodation, conference centres, laboratories, sports facilities, and commercial retail.
- Writing and updating governance documents – including Policies, Water Safety Plans and Code of Practice as well as writing the design standards for the Capital Projects Team. Clewswas also responsible for ensuring Legionella Risk Assessments remained suitable and sufficient.
- Training - delivering appropriate training to the Estates Team, wider University Stakeholders and various forums.
- Compliance – Supporting the universities vision for compliance through design, construction and operation phases with industry regulations, standards and guidance such as Water Regulations, HSE, BSi, CIBSE and BSRIA, ensuring compliance for circa 400 individual water systems.
In his new role as an Authorising Engineer (Water), Clews will be working closely with both existing and new clients
One of Clew's unique achievements was achieving compliance through the COVID-19 pandemic and the accommodation of athletes representing the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

Clew's career in the education sector began in 1991 at Coventry University, where he spent 12 years as a Mechanical Design Engineer, heavily involved in creating efficient water system designs while ensuring safety and regulatory standards were met.
In his new role as an Authorising Engineer (Water), Clews will be working closely with both existing and new clients.

Marian Baltaru joins from another well-known UK environmental compliance company
His keen focus on water regulations and legionella compliance will undoubtedly enhance our services.
Marian Baltaru joins from another well-known UK environmental compliance company, where he was employed as a water hygiene engineer. In his role, his responsibilities included temperature monitoring, sampling, system inspections, various remedial works, and maintaining log books, all in line with ACoP L8, HSG 274, and BS7592.
Marian Baltaru, said: "I joined the Water Hygiene Centre as the next step in my career progression. When I first started in the industry, I set a goal to become a risk assessor. After being approached by a few companies, and after research, I was impressed by how the Water Hygiene Centre maintains a very high standard and accreditations, and most importantly, the opportunities for improvement and continuous development."
Baltaru will join the risk assessment team and will be instrumental in delivering our UKAS accredited Legionella risk assessments to clients located in the North of England and Scotland.
