University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) has been shortlisted for an international award for its innovative work using wireless technology to improve patient care. The trust has been named as a finalist in the Wireless Achievement Awards for its use of BlackBerry technology in a range of areas. UHB, which runs the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, has used BlackBerry technology to manage its emergency department, as well as requests for drugs from its pharmacy and for other systems under development. Director of IT, Stephen Chilton, said: "This application delivers key performance indicators to administrators' BlackBerry smartphones so they can monitor compliance and take corrective action, if required, on the spot. The work done at UHB is being reviewed by other NHS trusts and has the potential to assist thousands of employees across the UK." UHB uses software from Webalo to develop solutions for specific challenges by helping to connect existing systems through custom-designed applications. The Wireless Achievement Awards will be held at BlackBerry World in Orlando, Florida, in May.
