The new Scarborough Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) has opened its doors.
The diganostics building is located at Scarborough Business Park in Eastfield.
The purpose-built facility is part of the UK's push to provide a range of non-acute diagnostic services closer to home, helping to reduce waiting times, support earlier diagnosis and improve access to care.
The Principal Contractor for the project was Darwin Group.
Part of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, the project was rate Very Good on its last visit in 2025.
Infiniti Scaffolding, which provided scaffolding equipment and inspections for the project, also described the build as "modular" in nature.
The area is seeing significant investment, with a brand-new £47m Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (UECC) opening at Scarborough Hospital in May 2025, marking the largest capital investment in the history of York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Services at the CDC
Services began in June, with CT scanning, ultrasound and walk-in blood testing, MRI, X-ray and cardiorespiratory diagnostics all available.
The centre is part of a national programme to expand Community Diagnostic Centres across England, bringing diagnostic services out of busy hospital settings and into local communities. CDCs are designed to provide patients with quicker, more convenient access to tests, helping to diagnose a range of conditions, including cancer, heart and respiratory disease, at the earliest possible stage.
A new walk-in blood testing service is also now available at the centre from Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, with no appointment necessary.
York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Chief Executive, Clare Smith, said: “The opening of the Scarborough Community Diagnostic Centre is fantastic news for local people and an important milestone for healthcare across the Yorkshire Coast.
“By bringing more diagnostic services closer to where people live, we can make it easier and more convenient for patients to access the tests they need.
“Earlier diagnosis can make a real difference to people’s lives and health outcomes. This new facility will help us reduce waiting times, improve patient experience and ensure more people receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has helped make this important development possible.”
Managing Director of York Teaching Hospital Facilities Management, Chris Norman, added: “The facility has been designed to provide a modern, comfortable and accessible environment, equipped with the latest diagnostic technology.
“This has been a major investment in healthcare for Scarborough and the surrounding communities. The centre will not only improve access to diagnostic services but also help support the long-term sustainability of healthcare services across the region.”
NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board Chief Executive, Teresa Fenech, said: “The opening of the Scarborough Community Diagnostic Centre is a really important step forward for people living across the Yorkshire Coast.
“By providing easier access to tests and scans closer to home, this new facility will help people get answers sooner, reduce the need to travel and support earlier diagnosis and treatment, particularly for conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illness.
“This is a fantastic example of partners across the NHS working together to improve services for local communities, and it will make a real difference to patients and their families.”
By providing more diagnostic capacity away from the acute hospital setting, the centre will help more patients receive faster access to tests and scans, supporting earlier diagnosis, shorter waits for treatment and better outcomes for local communities.
