Offsite construction specialist Reds10 has developed a full-scale prototype of a modular in-patient bedroom, complete with ensuite and corridor connection.
"The prototype is planned to support the delivery of the government’s £37bn New Hospital Programme.
“At Reds10, we firmly believe in the potential of industrialisation to revolutionise the construction industry,” said Paul Ruddick, Chairman of Reds10. “The New Hospital Programme’s commitment to integrating modern methods of construction into a standardised and programmatic approach will transform the delivery of this critical infrastructure, improving productivity, quality, and sustainability while delivering better value.”
The relaunched NHP will deliver new hospitals in three five-year waves through to 2030, backed by an initial £15bn investment.
The full-scale prototype, complete with bedroom, ensuite and adjoining corridor, was built at the company’s 300,000 sqft facility in Driffield, Yorkshire. It is designed to serve as a standardised building block for future hospital projects.
This prototype allows NHS teams and design partners to test layouts, mechanical and electrical interfaces and patient flow before wider rollout.
Commissioned under the NHP’s “Hospital 2.0” initiative, the prototype forms part of a drive to modernise hospital construction using standardisation and modern methods of construction. The approach aims to reduce build times, improve quality and predictability, and ensure hospitals are more sustainable and easier to maintain.
The prototype also aims to de-risk future hospital builds by
