Polar NE has completed a specialist glazing project at Belvoir Ward, an acute mental health admissions ward at the Bradgate Mental Health Unit in Leicester.
The £1.4m project, operated by Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust, was completed in May 2025 and delivered with Tilbury Douglas as main contractor.
Belvoir Ward is one of seven acute admissions wards at the Bradgate Mental Health Unit, providing care for people experiencing acute mental health needs.
Polar NE was appointed to provide and install specialist screens, doors and windows across the ward, following concerns from the trust’s leadership around the existing systems.
The project called on Polar NE’s experience in mental healthcare environments, where glazing systems must balance safety, durability, security and patient wellbeing.
Products used on the scheme included Medway Seclusion, Hamble Secure and Trent Fixed systems, supporting the ward’s requirement for robust, healthcare-specific solutions.
For Polar NE, the project also reflected the strength of its ongoing relationship with both Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust and Tilbury Douglas, having previously delivered improvements across the wider site.
The company said the work at Belvoir Ward demonstrated the importance of specialist product knowledge and reliable delivery in live healthcare environments, particularly where existing facilities need to be upgraded to meet modern mental healthcare standards.
Managing Director James Hill said: “Mental healthcare projects require a very careful balance between safety, performance and the needs of the people using the space every day.
“At Belvoir Ward, the trust wanted to bring the environment up to the right standard, and our role was to provide glazing systems that could support that aim without compromising on security or quality.

It was a project where the impact was clear from the moment it was handed back. When your work receives that level of emotional response from staff, it reinforces why these environments matter so much
Polar NE said the response from staff at handover was particularly meaningful, with the team receiving an emotional reaction to the completed works.
The company added that the project exceeded expectations and further strengthened its position as a trusted partner for specialist glazing in mental healthcare settings.
Rob Lofthouse, operations manager at Polar NE, said: “Belvoir Ward is a site we know well, and that understanding helped us deliver a solution that met the needs of the trust, the contractor and the people working within the ward.
“These projects are never just about products. They are about creating safer, more appropriate environments for patients and staff, and making sure every detail performs as it should.
“Being repeatedly trusted to work across the site is something we are proud of, and Belvoir Ward is another example of how our team can deliver specialist healthcare glazing with care, precision and confidence.”
Polar NE specialises in architectural glazing products for healthcare, mental healthcare and secure environments. Its work at Belvoir Ward included specialist screens, doors and windows designed to support the safety, durability and performance requirements of acute mental health facilities.
The project forms part of Polar NE’s wider commitment to improving lives by design through secure, specialist glazing solutions for complex healthcare environments.
