The upgrade of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at North Unit Critical Care has been officially opened to the public by Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
The upgrade has created more side rooms for very unwell patients, and the addition of automated dispensing cabinets has made dispensing medications quicker and safer.
It comes after the opening of the Trust’s brand-new ICU extension early last year.
Last year’s extension increased the total ICU capacity to 12 patients, with space for up to 24 patients if needed.

Both spaces were designed around the needs of critical care patients, with more space and upgraded facilities.
The new design of the ICU units also includes lighted murals that bring the outdoors inside to create a calmer environment for patients, their loved ones, and staff.
Divisional Operations Director of Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Tayo Fowowe, said: “I am excited to see this state-of-the-art critical care unit open here at Homerton, strengthening Homerton’s commitment to providing outstanding care.”
Critical Care Matron, Pedro Silva, said: “Now that the new unit is open, we have more space in each bed bay, it’s quieter, and it will reduce non-clinical transfers between unit and recovery during times of increased acuity. It's safer and gives more time for the team to look after patients and families.”
“It will make a really positive impact on patients and their loved ones, as well as the team,” Silva concluded.
