NHS Property Services (NHSPS) chief executive Martin Steele is to leave the organisation at the end of March 2027, with recruitment for his successor now under way.
Steele joined NHSPS as chief operating officer before becoming CEO. During his nine years with the organisation, he has overseen efforts to strengthen estate compliance and governance, improve operational performance and develop its role as an estates partner to the NHS.
NHSPS manages around 3,000 properties across England, inherited from 161 Primary Care Trusts.
The organisation said its role in supporting wider NHS estate transformation is growing, with the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England recognising its contribution to delivery of the NHS 10 Year Health Plan.
This includes the delivery of 11 Neighbourhood Health Centres as part of the first wave of the programme.
“After nine years with NHS Property Services, I have decided that the time is right for a new chapter and I will leave the organisation at the end of March next year,” said Steele.
“It has been a privilege to lead NHSPS through a period of significant transformation.”
NHSPS chair Nick Moberly thanked Steele for his leadership, saying he had helped establish the organisation as a “trusted and respected partner” to the NHS.
During 2025/26, NHSPS said it unlocked £186.4m in funding and value for the NHS, invested £80.5m in capital and identified £32.3m in in-year savings.
It also reported that it impacted 3.5 million patients, reduced carbon emissions by 5.2% and cut vacant space by 33,906sqm. Building compliance was sustained at 98%.
Steele will remain in post until the end of March 2027 to support the transition to his successor.
