Planning permission has been granted for a new mental health crisis assessment service for Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust.

Hunters’ healthcare team has announced it has won planning consent for the innovative new mental service at Highgate Mental Health Centre.

The unit, which has been designed in conjunction with service users, carers, staff, and other local stakeholders, is being built over two floors, partly extended over an existing single-storey building.

It will accommodate all key clinical adjacencies, as well as providing a courtyard garden for patients experiencing a mental health crisis.

The facility is part of the wider strategic plan to move mental health crisis facilities out of hospital A&E departments and into appropriate specialist care facilities.

Tim Ashton, director of the healthcare team at Hunters, said: “We worked closely with the trust on a challenging site to maximise the footprint for their needs while creating a calm new environment for patients.

“It’s one of a number of mental health schemes we are designing in a sector which is at the forefront of everyone’s minds currently.”
