Darwin Group has begun major work on the new state-of-the-art Royal Bournemouth Hospital building, which will increase patient ward capacity across the region

Darwin Group has started work on the new state-of-the-art Royal Bournemouth Hospital building, part of the government’s New Hospitals Programme.

The UK-based healthcare construction expert will deliver the 10,800 sqm building using modular construction.

The building is due for completion in the winter of 2025 and swift progress has already been made at the site with demolition nearing completion.

It is anticipated that the height of the new building will be similar to the Births, Emergency and Critical Care Children's Health building on the Royal Bournemouth Hospital site, which is nearing completion and is 30m at its tallest point.

Richard Pierce, Darwin Group CEO, said: "We are incredibly proud to be working alongside our NHS partners to deliver this major project for the people of Dorset. The site will improve healthcare and outcomes for the local community for many years to come."

"With the demand for healthcare services higher than ever, the new unit will be able to extend and expand services for the local community while also providing employment opportunities for local people ranging from medical staff to support staff," Pierce concluded.

Further, the new £91m hospital building forms part of the £500m transformation programme across the University Hospital Dorset’s sites (NHS Foundation Trust).

The new building will provide four new hospital wards, totalling 110 beds. Each level will have additional facilities including changing, showering, and rest facilities for staff.

There will also be additional extensive catering facilities on the ground floor to complement the new offer of improved food quality and choices.

In terms of sustainability, the new facility will be constructed to include a photovoltaic (solar) system for renewable energy, to help the building be zero carbon.

Dr Robin O’Gorman, UHD medical care group’s medical director said: "We are absolutely delighted to see this project underway. Patients will benefit from new ward spaces, with the majority being single rooms. Staff will also benefit from having a great place to work within."
