Plans to transform the outdated Hillingdon Hospital in north west London have been approved by council planners.
The London Borough of Hillingdon’s Major Applications Planning Committee has given the green light to create a new, future-ready hospital alongside a mixed-use development that promotes healthy living.
Global design and technology firm Arcadis IBI Group is providing masterplanning, healthcare planning, architecture, and landscape architecture services for the 79,000sq m project, which will replace the existing hospital, which is no longer fit for purpose.
Under the plans, the hospital will be rebuilt to provide a larger emergency department, a new diagnostic centre, labour ward, and a critical care unit.
The plans include a larger A&E department, new diagnostic centre, labour ward, and a critical care unit
Forging ahead
Construction work will take place near the existing hospital site, which will remain operational throughout to minimise disruption.
The old hospital will then be demolished, releasing land for other uses.
Tony Burley, UK and Ireland managing principal for the buildings group at Arcadis IBI, said: “This critically-important facility can now be regenerated to deliver exceptional care to the many residents who need it, while also helping them to live healthier lives.
“As a local resident myself, I am proud to have been part of this project and am delighted that we can now forge ahead with bringing the vision for this new hospital to life.”
Matthew Swindells, chairman in common for North West London Acute Provider Collaborative, added: “We’re all delighted that Hillingdon Council has made this decision which is a major boost for our patients, staff, and the people of Hillingdon in our ongoing campaign.
“A new Hillingdon Hospital would be a state-of-the-art new building that will give patients and staff the facility they deserve.”
Strengthening connections
As part of a wider masterplan to strengthen connections between the hospital and its surrounding community, links to existing transport hubs will be created alongside new housing, as well as space for commercial and incubator initiatives allied to healthcare innovation and wellness promotion, with land set also aside for public use.

To reduce carbon emissions and operational costs, Arcadis IBI’s masterplan meets stringent BREEAM ‘Excellent’ sustainability standards.
Other collaborators on the project include AECOM (civil, structural and mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering); Savills (town planning and townscape consulting); Prior + Partners (residential masterplanning); Ridge and Partners (construction consulting and BREEAM assessment); Mott MacDonald (transport consulting); and Tenos (fire safety engineering).
The trust is now awaiting final confirmation of funding from central government and the planning application will go to the Mayor of London for final approval.
