Five ‘green’ medical centres will battle it out for the title of Best Healthcare Building at the BREEAM Awards 2015.
BREEAM is the world’s leading and most widely-used environmental assessment method for buildings. The cream of the crop will be announced on Tuesday, 3 March at a ceremony at The London Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square, London.
In the healthcare category, the five finalists are:
- Cloughmore Medical Centre, Cardiff
- Dumfries & Galloway Acute Mental Health Unit
- Lees Medical Practice, Oldham
- Peterborough Primary Care Centre
- Urgent and Emergency Care Centre, New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton
The Cloughmore Medical Centre is one of Wales’ most energy-efficient health premises, with a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. It features include stack ventilation, natural cooling, and rooftop solar panels, which provide up to half of its electricity.
Apollo Capital Projects Developments was in charge of construction. Its managing director, Rob James, said: “We’re thrilled that the superb sustainability and energy-efficiency credentials of the Cloughmore Medical Centre have been recognised by BREEAM. The aim of the project was to provide both a state-of-the-art modern medical centre and a high-quality, landmark building which would enhance the local area and benefit the community.”
As well as being shortlisted as the Best Healthcare Building, the Cloughmore Medical Centre is also a finalist for the Your BREEAM Award , which is decided by votes cast by readers of the Building4change.com website.
Lees Medical Practice, designed by PRP Architects and developed by United Healthcare Developments features 50kW solar panels on its roof. Rather than air-conditioning, it also benefits from a natural ventilation system, which creates a fresh and temperate atmosphere throughout the year. This sustainable building is built for longevity, with 100sq m of expansion space incorporated into the scheme.
It also received a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
