The construction company has completed four major upgrades to Bradford Royal Infirmary’s maternity facilities

Morgan Sindall Construction has officially completed its work on the first phase of building works delivered as part of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s (BTHFT) Outstanding Maternity Services (OMS) programme.

The £15.5m refurbishment at Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI) involved the delivery of four major upgrades to the hospital’s maternity facilities, designed to improve the environment and experience for women and staff.

“From emergency triage to day-case monitoring, the improved facilities will strengthen every stage of the maternity experience,” said Ben Hall, Yorkshire Area Director at Morgan Sindall Construction.

The four major upgrades completed by Morgan Sindall as part of the Phase 1 programme include:

  • A fully renovated Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC), providing enhanced triage space for women from 16 weeks of pregnancy, including a reception area, a four-bedded bay, single rooms with en-suite facilities, and a dedicated triage room.
  • A new administrative department extension, created to house administrative and maternity station staff in modern office accommodation.
  • An enhanced antenatal clinic, comprising 11 clinical examination rooms and a spacious reception and waiting area for up to 70 people.
  • A new Antenatal Day Unit (ANDU), located adjacent to the MAC, increasing overall capacity and supporting integrated care.

Each year, around 5,500 babies are born at BRI, and the programme aims to support growing demand at one of the busiest maternity units in Yorkshire.

The Phase 1 completion also included a focus on supporting local employment, skills initiatives and community engagement throughout the project.

The next phase of the Outstanding Maternity Services programme will continue, although no timeline has yet been released by Morgan Sindall.

Other projects

The completion of Phase 1 of the Outstanding Maternity Services programme is one of several healthcare projects delivered by Morgan Sindall this year.

In September, the company completed and officially opened an Urgent Treatment Centre at Worthing Hospital, following multi-million-pound improvements procured through the SCAPE construction framework and delivered for University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

In July, at Harrogate District Hospital, Morgan Sindall marked a key milestone in the construction of a Day Case Surgery and Imaging Centre, part of a wider £50m capital investment funded by Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust and NHS England.
