Mansell, a Balfour Beatty company, has been appointed through the Liftco framework to undertake the design, build and fit-out of a new £23.6m hospital in Welwyn Garden City.
The new QEII facility will provide a local A&E, outpatient, diagnostic and therapy services.
This significant contract adds to Mansell’s growing work record under the LIFT (Local Improvement Finance Trust) initiative with Assemble Community Partnership, with whom it recently delivered the Bedford Enhanced Services Centre.
Work to construct the new four-storey facility, which will house 8,542sq m of clinical and community space, began in April and is scheduled to be completed in spring 2015.
Built to achieve a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating, sustainable design features include solar panels, a green roof, air source heat pumps and the use of natural ventilation to reduce energy consumption.
To ensure existing healthcare services remain unaffected by construction works, the new facility is being constructed adjacent to the existing operational QEII Hospital. Once complete, healthcare services will be transferred to the new facility. The remainder of the site will then be disposed of by East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust.
Andy Bowler, managing director of Balfour Beatty’s London New Build business, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Assemble to deliver this prestigious healthcare project. We are committed to applying our experience and ingenuity to create a space that is safe, modern and flexible, so that the local health services can be better tailored to meet an individual patient’s needs.”
