Boots UK uses Byotrol technology to keep feet sweet
Byotrol forms a germ-killing layer and also has a use in combating hospital superbugs
Boots UK, a pharmacy led health and beauty retailer, has teamed up with Manchester-based Byotrol, whose technology is used in sprays, wipes, mousses and other consumer products to help combat the spread of superbugs such as MRSA, to produce a 24-hour foot odour protection spray.
Byotrol is already used in Boots’ own-brand anti viral hand foam, Tesco cleaning sprays, the Tommee Tippee range of baby care products, and Morning Fresh products from PZ Cussons in Africa.
Byotrol technology is said to kill 99.9% of germs instantly and continues to protect for 24 hours. It does not contain alcohol or bleach.
Stephen Falder, the inventor of Byotrol, said: “What most people don’t realise is that traditional anti-microbials stop working once dry. Byotrol is different. It forms a germ-killing layer when applied to the skin or a surface, which stays there for hours exercising a powerful and deadly fight against microbes. We describe it as the silicon chip moment for hygiene.”
The effectiveness of Byotrol’s technology for use in hospitals was proved by the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) who measured Byotrol hand-foam against the NHS alcohol hand-gel (Spirigel) on their performance in killing and preventing dangerous microbes 24 hours after application.
The NHS alcohol hand-gel offered no residual effect, while Byotrol continued to kill 99.9% of bugs.
At Monroe Hospital in Bloomington, Indiana, US the use of Byotrol as part of the hospital’s disease control programme has meant no hospital-acquired infection from superbugs (MRSA, C. difficile and VRE) in the past three years.
Products using Byotrol are now on sale in Europe, Asia, the US and Africa.
Byotrol formulations have been tested against anti-microbial test methodologies including EN 1276, EN 13697, Residual Abrasion Testing methodologies, EN 1650, EN 14476 alongside many other tests.
