Extra space will help hospital deal with winter pressures

Balfour Beatty has completed construction of a £2.4m winter ward at Basildon University Hospital in Essex for the Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The new 28-bed ward is designed to increase capacity for emergency patients during the winter period and also includes a nursing station and bathrooms.

A modular approach was used to deliver the facility under the ProCure21+ national framework.

In total, 33 modular units were built, with the development designed and manufactured in just eight weeks. It then took one further week for the modular components to be placed on site by crane, significantly reducing the overall project programme.

Through the ProCure 21+ National Framework, Balfour Beatty has also delivered development works within the accident and emergency department, fracture clinic and the endoscopy department at the hospital.

Zoe Smith, director of estates at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “A tremendous amount of hard work went into delivering this winter ward and having everything in place for patients. The Balfour Beatty team worked very closely with our estates team to deliver our new ward on time and on budget.”

Andy Bowler, Balfour Beatty managing director for London new build projects, added: “We had a challenging time frame for this project as the new ward had to be operational for this winter period. Collaborative working, together with our latest modular construction methods, ensured we met the construction programme and delivered a project which meets Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s expectations and needs.”
