Housing 21 development to open in 2014

Work has started on a new Housing 21 housing scheme for older people in Derby.

The new extra care scheme for older people, which is being built on the site of the former Sunnyhill Infant School, will provide 70 two-bedroom apartments for affordable rent or shared ownership.

Communal facilities will include a hair salon, restaurant, shop, therapy suite and activity room. Residents will also benefit from a laundry room, communal lounge, assisted bathroom, buggy store, guest room and landscaped gardens.

Karen Lewis, regional operations director at Housing 21, said: “I’m delighted to see work get underway on this exciting new extra care development. This scheme is designed for people aged 55 and over and will enable residents to enjoy independent living in self-contained apartments along with access to care, which is tailored to individual need.”

Councillor Mark Tittley, cabinet member for adults and health at Derby City Council, added: “This exciting new development will provide much-needed extra care housing, which will enable people aged 55 and over to live independently for as long as they possibly can. It will provide new homes where tenants and owners can benefit from a range of facilities onsite, with 24-hour care services available if people need them.”

The £8m partnership scheme, which is funded by the Homes and Communities Agency, Derby City Council and Housing 21, will be completed towards the end of next year. It will provide a valuable hub for the wider local community who will also be able to access the communal facilities.
