Work set to begin on new entrance at Harrogate District Hospital

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust will redevelop Harrogate’s main entrance, with an accessible arrival space, retail facilities and upgraded reception areas that will be completed in spring 2027

Work is set to begin on the redevelopment of the main entrance at Harrogate District Hospital, following approval from Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust’s Board.

The project will create a new accessible entrance and upgraded arrival space for patients, visitors and staff, alongside new retail and refreshment facilities.

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust is delivering the scheme in partnership with property development and investment company noviniti and One Retail, the retail division of Compass Group UK & Ireland.

Planning approval for the redevelopment was secured in February 2026, with work due to be completed in spring 2027.

The redesigned entrance will include enhanced self-check and reception facilities, informal seating areas and increased toilet provision, including a changing places toilet.

New retail and refreshment facilities will include a Costa Coffee store and M&S Food outlet.

The project will also incorporate sustainability measures intended to reduce its environmental impact and support the Trust’s longer-term commitment to greener healthcare delivery.

The existing front entrance will remain in use throughout the construction period, with the Trust working with its partners to minimise disruption and maintain safe access to hospital services.

The hospital’s Café Bistro, located in the entrance, will close at the end of September, while WH Smith closed in July ahead of the redevelopment.

Food and drinks will remain available from Herriots restaurant on the first floor.

The project is primarily commercially funded, with the Trust stating that no funding will be taken from frontline care, patient services or staff budgets.

“Coming into a hospital as a patient, carer or visitor can be an anxious and emotional experience. We want everyone who walks through our doors to feel supported and reassured from the moment they arrive,” said Jonathan Coulter, Chief Executive at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust.

As the entrance works begin, Morgan Sindall is continuing work on a new £50m Day Case Surgery and Imaging Centre at Harrogate District Hospital.

The construction firm celebrated the completion of the structural steel framework in July 2025, after being appointed to the project earlier that year.
