West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven - the largest P21 project undertaken so far in the country – has been completed.
The new hospital, designed by Gilling Dod Architects, is the first phase of a two-part development, replacing the first NHS hospital ever built with a building costing far less than that of an equivalent PFI facility.
Initial design work for the new hospital commenced in 2009 and underwent many alterations due to changes in partnering and budget funding adjustments.
The new facility boasts an efficient and effective configuration, maximising area against cost to produce an excellent value-for-money solution that will provide a state-of-the-art exemplar health care solution that will last well into the middle of this century.
The design comprised many innovative modular construction techniques to minimise o- site disruption to the local community and hospital services. This method of construction enabled the team to maintain a high-quality building under close quality control.
