Plans for a new £3.5m medical centre in Enderby have been approved, with healthcare property developer OneMedical Property set to replace the village’s existing GP surgery with a larger purpose-built facility.
Blaby District Council’s planning committee unanimously approved the scheme, which will be built on the former playing fields of Danemill Primary School on Townsend Road.
Designed by Alessandro Caruso Architects (ACA), the two-storey centre will provide 13 consulting rooms, an on-site pharmacy and dedicated parking for 36 vehicles, alongside cycle storage, landscaping and new pedestrian infrastructure.
The development will replace Enderby Medical Centre’s existing premises on Shortridge Lane and is intended to provide additional healthcare capacity as the local population grows.
The building will be accessed from George Street and has been designed to respond to the character of the surrounding area.
The revised proposals retain the 13 clinical rooms originally proposed but reposition the building on the site.
Design changes include a pitched roof, Enderby Red brickwork and a dedicated pedestrian footpath.
The scheme was developed with the existing Enderby Medical Centre, which has been involved in proposals to provide the practice with new premises.
The planning application was revised following earlier proposals, with the changes intended to improve the building’s relationship with the site while retaining the required clinical accommodation.
“The committee was unanimous in its support for this much-needed new medical facility. The new centre will greatly enhance the capacity and services available at the existing practice,” said Councillor Lee Breckon, Chair of Blaby District Council’s Planning Committee.
OneMedical Property said the development is needed to provide sufficient healthcare capacity to meet future demand in the area.
The approval allows the project to progress towards construction of the replacement medical centre, which will bring the GP practice and pharmacy together in a purpose-built facility.
