One of the largest public health projects ever undertaken in Jersey has been granted full planning permission.
Plans for a new £804m hospital have been approved by Jersey’s Minister of the Environment following the publication of a planning inspector’s report recommending approval.
Designed by Llewelyn Davies, the 70,000sq m Our Hospital Project (OHP) can now move forward to deliver a first-class facility that will provide the best in healthcare when it becomes fully operational by late 2026.
The design and delivery partner of the project is a joint venture partnership between ROK and FCC Construcción known as ROK FCC JV.
As lead architects, Llewelyn Davies was originally employed in July 2020 to assist with the evaluation and selection of five shortlisted sites.
And, from November 2020, through to the submission of the detailed application exactly one year later, under project director, Stephen Featherstone, and lead clinical director, Robert Etchell’ the planning and design has been developed with extensive public and clinical engagement.
Featherstone said: “This is a massive achievement for the design and delivery team and the people of Jersey.
“A huge number of people have been involved in making this project a tremendous success, including incredibly-supportive clinical teams for whom this outcome is richly deserved.
“The people of Jersey have long been wanting this project to be delivered, and now it finally can be.”
Planning inspector, Philip Staddon, added: “Given the nature of this once-in-a-generation development proposal, accepting the importance and imperative of delivering the hospital on this allocated site, the key overarching test is whether the application proposal represents the very-best proposal in planning terms when considered ‘in the round’. My conclusion is that it does.
“The result is an undisputedly-high-quality healthcare campus, with contemporary buildings in an attractive landscaped setting, which would enable patients to enjoy a very-pleasant, indeed quite-stunning, environment and panoramic views out to sea.”
The project has been given full planning permission, with work due to start on site in the coming months
