Meet the judges
Steve Martin, associate partner at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners
Steve has considerable experience in the co-ordination of large complex projects from concept design to construction detailing. He has been with the practice for 32 years, initially working on Heathrow Terminal 5 and he joined the Building Better Healthcare Awards judging panel after his work on the new cancer centre at Guy’s Hospital in London won the top trophies at the ceremony in 2017.
Catherine Zeliotis, senior associate and healthcare leader, Stantec
Catherine Zeliotis is an architect and healthcare leader in Stantec, with over 25 years experience within the healthcare sector. Her experience ranges from masterplanning to the clinical design of complex healthcare facilities and she joined the judging panel after her work on the new Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital in London won the top trophies at the ceremony in 2017. She has specialised in the design of cancer centres and has been at the forefront of many design innovations, leading the clinical design of many award-winning cancer care projects including, Calgary Cancer Centre, Canada; and Cleveland Clinic Cancer Centres, US and UAE.
Patrick Nicholls, founding director, Glancy Nicholls Architects
Patrick Nicholls has over 25 years experience successfully delivering award-winning projects across many sectors. During his career, he has advised several NHS trusts, numerous leading universities, as well as local and county authorities, to realise their building ambitions. Alongside managing a successful practice, Patrick has delivered a range of healthcare and adult care schemes, developing a strong understanding of how requirements have evolved and how to provide modern environments which fit daily needs. Several projects have since achieved the university’s ‘Gold’ standard for dementia-friendly design and have been used as exemplar projects.
Kimia Benam, creative director, KB Architects
Kimia Benam is the creative director of KB Architects and founded the practice in 2019 in London. Since graduating from Northumbria University in 2014, Kimia has worked on a number of healthcare design-led projects in several high-profile healthcare architectural firms and multidisciplinary practices, gaining invaluable knowledge in all stages of projects in the sector. Kimia leads her practice with architectural design and interior design services complimented by a project management offering which she provides as part of her practice’s scope of services.
Catsou Roberts, director of Vital Arts, Barts Health NHS Trust
Catsou Roberts is the director of Vital Arts, the in-house arts and health group at Barts Health NHS Trust. She advocates for raising the standard of arts and health, regularly writing and lecturing on the topic. She also serves in various advisory roles including for Maggie’s, Culture Mile/CoL, Tate Exchange, Venice Architecture Biennale (Italian Pavilion 2020), and the AHRC-funded Dementia Connect. Roberts has juried several public realm design competitions, awards, and art prizes.
Kevin Howell, director of estates and facilities, East and North Herts NHS Trust
Kevin became director of estates and facilities at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust in 2020. He has over 35 years experience in the NHS, having held a number of senior and executive estates and facilities roles, including at the Princess Royal University Hospital, Barnet and Chase Farm, and North Middlesex University Hospital. Prior to joining East and North Herts NHS Trust he was director of estates at St George’s Hospital in Tooting and was also director of environment at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
Dr Peter Carter OBE
Peter Carter was chief executive of the Royal College of Nursing from January 2007 to August 2015. Prior to that he was chief executive of the Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust for 12 years. Peter is a graduate of the Institute of Personnel and Development and has a Masters Degree and PhD from the University of Birmingham. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing, an honorary fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners, and an Ad Eundem of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. In 2011 he was awarded the inaugural Presidents Medal of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and in 2006 he was awarded the OBE by Her Majesty The Queen for his service to the NHS.
Patricia Wilkie, president and chairman of the National Association for Patient Participation
Patricia is a social scientist particularly interested in the patient perspective. She has spent much of her working life as a researcher in academic departments of medicine researching topics as diverse as HIV and AIDS, prescribing, and the ethical, social and psychological implications of genetic disease. She has established patient groups in the medical Royal Colleges and other national organisations and was the first ever lay co-opted member on the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and chairman of its lay committee. She is also on the board of LTOL and a member of several advisory groups. Patricia has an Honorary Fellowship of both the Royal College of Radiologists and the Royal College of General Practitioners and is President of the National Association for Patient Participation.
Paul Styler, Director of Infrastructure Solutions, Lexica
Paul is an NHS trained accountant who has specialised in structured finance/PPP and related commercial aspects of asset development for over 20 years. He has worked in the NHS and for ‘Big 4’ accountancy as well as global built asset practices, supporting clients to develop and work within complex contractual structures. He has advised on numerous project financing and development schemes for public and private sector parties, supporting over 100 different PPP mandates.

Judges are on the lookout for projects, large and small, that demonstrate a measurable positive impact on the overall experience of patients, staff, and visitors within a healthcare environment.
