First NHS demonstrator trust to complete Scan4Safety uses hTrak system
Prospitalia h-trak, formerly Healthlogistics, has announced that Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the first of the six NHS demonstrator trust sites to have completed all the required GS1 and PEPPOL phases of the Department of Health’s Scan4Safety programme.
As early as April 2014 the forward-thinking trust started using the hTrak system in general theatres and rapidly learnt the value that procedure-level information could bring to its materials management process, as well as the improvements in patient safety by using hTrak’s ‘track and trace’ functionality.

As a result of this knowledge, the trust rolled out the hTrak system across all procedure areas, supported by the Department of Health’s Scan4Safety programme.
This summer the trust was independently audited and acknowledged as the first to successfully meet the required Department of Health Scan4Safety standards for materials management, purchase-to-pay and product recall.
In addition to the patient safety improvements delivered by Derby’s Scan4Safety implementation using hTrak; the trust has realised financial benefits of over £1.6m and ais on course to exceed its original forecasted projection of attaining a 4:1 ‘Value for Money’ ratio.
Kevin Downs, director of finance and performance, claims this achievement comes from operating a cost-efficient supply chain and having more-detailed financial management information than in previous years.
He said: “Using the procedure data and pricing information captured by hTrak has enabled our finance, clinical and procurement teams to review their performance and make more-informed decisions.
“Our starting point though was some 18 months before the inception of the Scan4Safety Programme when we first introduced hTrak procedure-based barcode scanning for material management and track and trace to enhance patient safety.
“To date our clinical teams across our 39 theatres have scanned and costed over 120,000 procedures.”
