HP delivers digital transformation for Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Change programme enables staff at Addenbrooke’s and Rosie hospitals to save time, reduce risk and make better decisions
HP Enterprise Services has announced that, as part of its visionary IT transformation for Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) NHS Foundation Trust, it has provided cclinical and frontline staff at Addenbrooke’s and Rosie hospitals with fast, secure access to integrated patient data across the hospital campus.
Data from medical devices, pathology devices and physiological monitors now goes straight into the Epic EMR system, which saves time, reduces the risk of human error and enables faster, more-accurate decision-making. Clinicians can see notes from ongoing operations on-screen in real time, and laboratory orders and results are integrated into the pathology systems. Automated workflows 'push' urgent results to clinical staff rather than them having to constantly keep looking out for them. In line with NHS objectives, nurses in CUH’s operating theatres, post-op and intensive care now work in a paper-lite environment.
“All of our IT is now managed by HP – and the system is already delivering real benefits,” said Dr Afzal Chaudhry, chief medical information officer at CUH.
“A new virtual fracture clinic is delivering care more quickly while also freeing up appointment slots. Integration of the discharge medication prescription order by the doctor with the pharmacy and the dispensary has halved the time it takes to prepare these medications for the patient. The eHospital system has enabled us to improve our services.”
As well as delivering a warranted environment for the first Epic EPR system in the NHS, HP is enhancing the user experience for CUH staff with workplace management and support services. HP has provided a network operations centre, upgraded all CUH’s IT systems software, and started migrating legacy applications to the cloud.
HP infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and software-as-a-service (SaaS) now deliver consistently high quality IT services through secure, highly-resilient HP Converged Infrastructure. 6,000 new clinical desktops along with 400 laptops, 500 handheld devices and 400 workstations on wheels help staff deliver better patient care.
A 21,000-port HP network with 1,300 wireless access points supports mobile working throughout the campus, while bring-your-own-device capability for up to 3,725 users allows CUH’s clinicians to securely access applications from their own devices both within the hospital and externally. HP Managed Print Services allow staff to print from any enabled HP printer, wherever they are on the CUH site.
