The Building Better Healthcare Awards introduces the Building Design class, comprising eight categories that highlight the essential role of the built environment in modern healthcare delivery



In the realm of healthcare, the quality of service delivery and patient outcomes rightfully take center stage. However, it is crucial not to overlook the vital role played by the built environment in supporting these services. Building design serves as a critical infrastructure, enabling clinical teams to carry out their work effectively while fostering a supportive environment for patient and staff wellbeing and recovery.

Eight awards in the Building Design class

  • Best Healthcare Development (UK – value < £10m):
    This category celebrates exemplary new-build or refurbishment projects within the UK healthcare sector, with a capital value of under £10 million. Judges will be seeking projects that exhibit cleverness, innovative design and thoughtfulness, creating a positive, supportive and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors/carers and staff.
     
  • Best Healthcare Development (UK – value > £10m):
    Similar to the previous category, this award recognises outstanding projects within the UK healthcare sector, but with a capital value exceeding £10 million. The judges will evaluate the project's ability to showcase excellence in design and deliver a transformative environment that positively impacts healthcare delivery.
     
  • Best Mental Health/Dementia Care Development:
    This category focuses on exemplary new-build or refurbishment projects dedicated to mental health or dementia care. Entries will be assessed based on their ability to create environments that promote mental health, enhance the well-being of individuals with dementia and support effective care delivery.
     
  • Best Modular/Mobile Healthcare Facility:
    Highlighting the growing emphasis on offsite construction methods, this award recognises outstanding modular or mobile healthcare facilities. Entries can encompass primary, acute and community care services, encompassing modular and mobile building solutions developed under factory conditions.
     
  • Best Private Healthcare Facility:
    Acknowledging the substantial investments made in private healthcare, this new category honors the best private healthcare facility. Judges will consider the facility's design and its capacity to meet the unique needs of patients and clinicians while contributing to improved health services.
     
  • Best International Healthcare Facility:
    This category recognises exceptional healthcare facilities outside of the UK that demonstrate excellence in design and contribute to advancing healthcare services globally. It showcases outstanding projects that inspire innovation and push boundaries in international healthcare.
     
  • Best Interior Building Product:
    Product supplies and manufacturers have the opportunity to shine in this category, which highlights the best interior building products. Judges will evaluate entries based on how the product meets the specific needs of patients and clinicians, as well as its potential for wider implementation in healthcare settings.
     
  • Best Furniture and Fixtures Product:
    This category celebrates exceptional furniture and fixtures products that enhance the healthcare environment. Judges will assess entries based on their ability to improve patient comfort, support efficient workflows and align with the specific requirements of healthcare facilities.
