Modular construction specialist hands over £6.5m COVID-19 facility in under six months

Modular construction specialist, Darwin Group, has delivered a new emergency COVID-19 ward for the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.

The global pandemic has heightened the demand for additional medical facilities in the UK, and the trust wanted a solution delivered at pace.

The Shropshire-based firm’s modern methods of construction and turnkey service, enabled a quick turnaround on the project, which was completed inside just six months.

The new £6.57m emergency ward, covering 1,394sq m, provides 35 additional hospital beds and is fully Health Technical Memoranda (HTM) compliant – meaning the design, installation, and engineering behind the facility are inline with best-in-class healthcare standards.

Darwin Group’s delivery of this build has redefined what is achievable against tight deadlines and within a tight budget.

Its end-to-end turnkey services, covering all stages of design, planning, engineering and construction from start to finish, also enabled construction to continue during lockdown at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Modern methods of construction allowed Darwin Group to complete much of the build offsite, in its highly-controlled factory environment, where minimising waste and quality control are a key focus.

Installation within a complex live hospital environment also called on Darwin Group’s industry experience, allowing for the build to be completed with minimal disruption.

Charles Pierce, managing director at Darwin Group, said: “This is our third permanent hospital ward that we have delivered during the Coronavirus outbreak, following on from schemes in at the Royal Albert Infirmary in Wigan and New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton.

“Our skilled in-house team of designers, planners and architects have considered the specific needs of each hospital along the way and how to match these with the surrounding environment – and our delivery at Barnet Hospital is a best-in-class example of that.

“We are proud British company delighted to be supporting the NHS in the fight against COVID-19 and we are acutely aware of the significance of this emergency facility, and how pivotal it could prove for the patients, doctors and nurses it will benefit.”
