Efforts by NHS Nottingham City and NHS Nottinghamshire County to reduce the carbon footprint of health services in the area have been recognised with a prestigious award. The PCTs scooped one of the top prizes at the British Medical Journal Awards for their work with the Nottingham Energy Partnership. The Sustainable Healthcare Award was given in recognition of an 85% reduction in recycling rates for domestic waste. Andrew Hall, director of partnerships for NHS Nottingham City, said: "This is true recognition of many years' work and commitment in combating climate change, fuel poverty and reducing NHS environmental impacts locally." Carbon reduction initiatives have included solar panels being fitted to health centres, improved waste recycling and a car sharing scheme for staff. The initiative also looked beyond the trusts' day-to-day operations by using their purchasing power to help reduce the carbon footprint of suppliers.
