Bender UK upgrades critical power systems serving theatres and neonatal unit at Northampton General Hospital

The healthcare electrical specialist has replaced ageing electrical infrastructure and installed new monitoring technology to improve resilience in operating theatres, recovery areas, day surgery facilities and the neonatal unit

Northampton General Hospital has upgraded electrical infrastructure serving its neonatal unit and surgical facilities as part of a programme to strengthen power resilience across its estate.

The project, delivered by healthcare electrical infrastructure specialist Bender UK, included replacing ageing systems and installing monitoring and alarm technology to help estates teams identify potential electrical faults more quickly.

The upgrades cover Gosset Ward, the hospital’s neonatal unit, as well as Mansfield Orthopaedic Theatres, associated recovery rooms and day surgery facilities.

These areas rely on a continuous and reliable power supply to support clinical procedures and life-dependent medical equipment.

The work also included additional electrical safety improvements in patient care areas to bring the environments in line with modern healthcare standards.

The monitoring systems are designed to give estates teams greater visibility of electrical infrastructure and help them respond to potential faults.

The installation was planned in collaboration with the Trust’s estates team to avoid disruption to patient care.

“In areas such as operating theatres, recovery rooms and the neonatal unit, critical power infrastructure has to provide absolute confidence that essential equipment will remain protected at all times,” said Daryl Coleman, Healthcare Sales Engineer at Bender UK.

The electrical upgrade comes amid wider investment in Northampton General Hospital’s estate and clinical facilities.

Recent projects include the refurbishment of a former intensive treatment unit into a new 33-bed ward, plans for a new community diagnostic centre and elective orthopaedic hub in Wellingborough, and a new framework appointment covering further improvements to the hospital estate, including an emergency department refurbishment.
