Public Health and Innovation Minister, Nicola Blackwood, has announced a cash injection to boost Yorkshire-based researchers.
Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Leeds will receive £3m, part of a wider £17m fund from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), with centres in Manchester and London also benefitting.
This is the latest wave of investment backing for Yorkshire-based clinicians and academics, following a £10.7m investment in NIHR Biomedical Research Centres in September and £3.8m in NIHR Clinical Research Facilities in November.
Investing today in research to improve patient safety is essential for making the NHS the best today, and for tackling the challenges of tomorrow
The NIHR investment will be spent on patient safety research, with the centres aiming to turn patient safety discoveries into practice, with previous research undertaken in London and Manchester already having an impact on NHS frontline services.
The Bradford NIHR PSTRC will be focused on adopting a new approach to managing safety by building resilience into the healthcare systems.
It will develop research projects looking at the role of patients and the workforce in safety as well the as safe use of medicines and the role of digital innovations for patient safety.
Blackwood said: “This is an exciting investment - backing our researchers to improve patient safety for patients in Yorkshire, and across England.
“We want every patient to receive the best and safest NHS treatment and care as possible.
"Investing today in research to improve patient safety is essential for making the NHS the best today, and for tackling the challenges of tomorrow.
Our investments through the NIHR will help our researchers strive for global excellence.”
Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s medical director, Dr Bryan Gill, added: “The creation of a Yorkshire and Humber Patient Safety Translational Research Centre is a fantastic achievement for the region.
With this funding, we will develop a centre of international excellence in patient safety research by bringing together a research community with a common purpose - to deliver high-quality research that addresses the needs of the 'whole' NHS
“The establishment of this exciting new initiative builds on the firm foundation of the 10-year partnership that currently exists between our trust and the University of Leeds.
“With this funding, we will develop a centre of international excellence in patient safety research by bringing together a research community with a common purpose - to deliver high-quality research that addresses the needs of the 'whole' NHS, and leads to even better outcomes for our patients.”
