£10m health centre project in Sudbury nears completion

A topping-out ceremony has been held to mark the completion of construction work on the highest point of a new community health centre in Sudbury.

The new £10m state-of-the-art centre is rapidly taking shape and on schedule for completion in the autumn.

The roof and most external fixtures of the building are now in place and the access road has recently been completed. Work will now begin on the internal structure and fit-out to create the internal corridors and rooms for all the new services, and installation of lifts, lighting, washrooms, flooring and ceilings.

NHS Property Services is managing the delivery of the project and overseeing mobilisation plans to get services moved into the centre as soon as it is completed. It will hold the head lease and manage the new building on behalf of the NHS commissioners when it is finished.

There have been many ups and downs over the past five years, and it has been extremely challenging at times, but the new centre is rapidly taking shape and is on schedule

Project lead, Mark Marshall of the NHS Property Services’ Suffolk team, said: “There have been many ups and downs over the past five years, and it has been extremely challenging at times, but the new centre is rapidly taking shape and is on schedule.”

The community has been campaigning for a new health facility since the 1970s. The project has become a reality thanks to a partnership between NHS Property Services, Assura Group, Galliford Try Partnerships, NHS West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group and the local community, including Sudbury WATCH and district, town and parish councils.

Galliford Try Partnerships’ South East managing director, Stuart Brodie, said: “Despite the recent bad weather we continue to make good progress on the health centre. We are delighted to be playing our part in creating this facility that will be of such great benefit to the local community in Sudbury.”

Once completed the new Sudbury Community Health Centre will bring together a number of services which are currently located in outdated NHS facilities in the town -Walnuttree Hospital, St Leonard’s Hospital and Acton Lane Clinic – along with a local GP practice.

NHS West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group will commission services from the new building. These will include paediatrics, dermatology, audiology, gynaecology, rheumatology, musculoskeletal physiotherapy, podiatry, speech and language therapy and continence clinics as well as X-ray, community midwifery, health visitors and community therapy, urology, ophthalmology and orthopaedics.
