Guy's and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust has become the first NHS organisation in London to install a Hi-Art TomoTherapy radiotherapy machine. The unit, manufactured by TomoTherapy, will be used to deliver targeted radiotherapy to hundreds of cancer patients, helping to increase capacity and improve outcomes. Currently, there are only six hospitals in the UK which provide the service, enabling medics to customise treatment for the individual patient. George Mikhaeel, head of clinical oncology at the trust, said: "In addition to delivering the most-advanced type of radiotherapy known as Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), the equipment uses daily CT imaging to guide treatment based on the patient's anatomy for that day, which means we know exactly where we are treating. This addition to our radiotherapy units means we can now treat more patients from across the South East and beyond to help improve their chances of recovery."
