Royal Shrewsbury Hospital has received planning permission as part of its Hospital Transformation Programme

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust has received planning permission for the works at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

These include the works under the Hospitals Transformation Programme (HTP), which is key to transforming health and care services across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, and mid-Wales.

Further, the Trust is progressing through the final stage of national approval for the HTP development.

It comes as the Trust previously (January 2024) announced it had appointed Integrated Health Projects (IHP) as its design and construction partner to progress the Hospitals Transformation Programme (HTP).

Enabling works

IHP has started enabling works on the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with hoarding being set up at the front of its site on Mytton Oak Road.

These works include temporary site cabins and hoardings which, due to the nature of the works, need to be close to the Emergency Department.

In addition to the main building improvements works will also include upgrades to site-wide infrastructure.

We recognise that during these development works we will need to work differently

IHP is a member of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, which seeks to respect communities impacted by building work. "We recognise that during these development works we will need to work differently, and we are committed to minimising the impact on our neighbours, patients and staff as much as possible," the Trust said. "We will be ensuring that there is appropriate signage on our sites to help patients know where to park and how to access services."

Update on new modular building

The Trust is proposing to construct a new two-storey building that will create much-needed additional wards.

The wards will support patients with rehabilitation and recovery, increase resilience during extreme pressures, and also reduce delays and waiting times in the Emergency Department.
