Final phase of renovations underway following funding approval from Welsh Government

Gleeds has begun the final phases of renovations at the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, following a decision from Health Minister, Vaughan Gething, to award £220m in funding for the scheme.

As project and cost manager, Gleeds will oversee works on behalf of the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

This latest phase will involve redesigning and relocating departments on the ground and first floor of the hospital in order to improve patient care and the working environment for staff by creating a more-efficient and modern setting.

Services set to benefit include primary operating theatres, critical care, radiology, pathology, and outpatient facilities.

The substantial project has required careful planning, as all works are to be carried out on a live site while ensuring minimal interruption to the patient experience.

Initially the ground and first-floor areas will be stripped back to their original steel frame in stages to enable the safe removal of asbestos from the building and to facilitate the implementation of up-to-date fire prevention design features throughout.

Getting this project to fruition has been a key priority for the Health Board, and the Welsh Government’s decision to award funding is indicative of its commitment to improving the healthcare provision across the country

Simon Williams, director responsible for Gleeds’ project management services in Wales, said: “Having worked closely with the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board on a number of projects over the years, we are delighted to be heading up the team delivering this major scheme for Merthyr Tydfil.

“The Welsh Government’s recent funding award represents a real investment in the future of this community and its healthcare system which will benefit patients and staff for generations to come.”

Health board chief executive, Paul Mears, added: “The Prince Charles Hospital provides vital services for the Cwm Taf Morgannwg area and beyond and this programme of works will ensure that we can continue to deliver high-quality care and an enhanced environment for our staff going forward.

“Getting this project to fruition has been a key priority for the health board, and the Welsh Government’s decision to award funding is indicative of its commitment to improving the healthcare provision across the country.”

Works on site are expected to complete by 2026.
