There are a multitude of static pressure care mattresses now available to healthcare professionals. However, static mattresses have their own limitations that cannot easily be overcome without completely changing the mattress.
24-7 Healthcare has now launched The Winncare EPSUS and The EPSUS AIR modular mattress systems, which allow the insertion of gel, or even active air cushions, to specific areas of the existing base, allowing users to upgrade from the standard protection a static mattress provides.
The Epsus range has four variations which include a single-piece mattress; a single-piece with the option of inserts that can be adapted to an individual’s level of risk; a three-part base which is compact and easy to transport and store; and a three-part base with air inserts that can adapt easily to any increased risk.
All versions of the EPSUS range feature re-enforced edges, which Winncare call ‘stabilising rails’, to help give more support and stability when conducting transfers in and out of a bed.
Clinical trials of the EPSUS mattresses concluded that it is ‘effective in helping prevent bedsores’. Worthy of note is the large number of people already suffering from bed sores that were included in the EPSUS study. The results showed that the EPSUS mattress was effective for those patients.”
Furthermore, it appears that the framework of the removable modules ‘gives patients better stability and better access to care’. The removable elements of variable scope showed better effectiveness for the populations covered by the study and that the mattress dealt effectively with the spread of load across various parts of the body.
“The EPSUS concept allows removable elements to be replaced with elements that use water, gel, or air, based on the development of the patient’s general health and proved to be a more-flexible support”, said a spokesman.
