Capita Healthcare Decisions today announces the appointment of Dr Charles Young as chief medical officer.
Dr Young is an emergency physician and senior healthcare information executive. He trained in medicine in London and continues to practice as an emergency physician at St Thomas’ hospital. For the last 15 years he has also worked in a range of evidence-based medicine, clinical decision support, and healthcare IT-based roles.
His career includes time as executive editor at The Lancet, and as editor-in-chief at The BMJ Evidence Centre, where he led the creation of Best Practice and BMJ Action Sets and relaunched the group’s evidence-based medicine product, Clinical Evidence. More recently, he worked as vice president and director of global clinical solutions at Wiley and as a consultant for a range of digital and telehealth companies, advising them on business strategy, editorial process, and clinical governance, with an emphasis on clinical risk management.
In addition to his work at Capita and St Thomas’ Hospital, Dr Young is also a longstanding member of the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) external accreditation committee, and a member of the Cochrane Editorial management committee. He has written numerous scientific and opinion based articles published in peer-reviewed journals and books, and lectures internationally and in the UK on subjects including evidence-based medicine, clinical decision support, clinical governance, critical appraisal of published research, and editorial management.
