One of the biggest challenges in healthcare in 2025 is the issue of data; how do you get it, process it, and make actionable decisions from it?

Health informatics expert Sabine van der Veer is working on a major new system in this field and speaks to Building Better Healthcare about her research and its goals, as well as integration challenges across the NHS.

The Senior Lecturer in the Division of Informatics, Imaging, and Data Sciences is currently working on the REmote MOnitoring of Rheumatoid Arthritis (REMORA) study.

NHS login was a great infrastructure for this

This study aims to develop, test, and evaluate a system for tracking daily symptoms in people living with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), specifically where data are collected using a smartphone app and integrated into NHS electronic patient records.

RA is a long-term condition and patients can go a long time between appointments. This can present challenges in accurate recollection and communication of symptoms to healthcare professionals.

This is the issue that the REMORA project is trying to tackle by getting patients to log symptoms on a daily basis and getting data sent to a central location to be summarised graphically for clinicians.

Independent app vs NHS login

The NHS’ digital landscape is varied and vast. Because of this, many people assume that basic operations are in action that are really not.
