The NHS National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC), operated by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, will deploy intelligent bedside terminals in patient bedrooms.
Due to open later this year, the NRC will offer specialist support for people recovering from life-changing injuries and illnesses, including traumatic brain injuries.
As part of its forward-looking approach, the centre has selected Airwave Healthcare to install iPad-based terminals that go far beyond traditional in-room entertainment.
Airwave Healthcare, part of the SCCI Group, was awarded the contract following a competitive procurement process that assessed both cost-effectiveness and sector expertise.
The intelligent terminals will be integrated with the NRC’s building management and care systems
The UK-based company specialises in patient entertainment and engagement technology within healthcare settings.
The intelligent terminals will be integrated with the NRC’s building management and care systems, allowing patients to control their environment, adjusting blinds, lighting, and heating directly from their bedside.
The aim is to help patients maintain independence during their recovery.
Miriam Duffy, Director of the NRC, said: “Our innovative approach to rehabilitation at the NRC will be a game-changer both for patients and rehabilitation as a whole.”
“This technology is one of a wide range of measures designed to deliver that step change for patients, helping them to engage in their ongoing rehabilitation 24 hours a day.
Intelligent bedside terminals will help to promote independence for our patients, many of whom have life-changing injuries.
“For patients with limited mobility, it will mean they can use the technology in their room to control their environment, without having to ask a member of staff. And for patients who may have impacted memory from brain injuries, it is another means by which we can keep them informed about what is happening in their care.”
Patients will be able to view information such as their estimated discharge date, medications, diet, and care team details
The devices will also support patient education and communication. Personalised rehabilitation content, care schedules, and electronic patient record access will be available via the same interface, helping individuals remain actively involved in their treatment.
Patients will be able to view information such as their estimated discharge date, medications, diet, and care team details.
Video calling functionality will enable patients to stay in touch with loved ones, and meal ordering will also be integrated.

These features will be delivered through MyCareTV, an enhanced patient engagement platform developed to support patient stimulation and autonomy.
Dean Moody, Healthcare Services Director at Airwave Healthcare, said: “In any hospital environment, investment in technology that helps to stimulate and engage patients in their care is important to enhance recovery.
“The needs of patients at the National Rehabilitation Centre place this in sharper focus. We will continue to work with healthcare professionals to understand changing needs and innovate to respond throughout this agreement. It is a privilege to support the NRC, a strong example of excellence in rehabilitation transformation, and we are committed to helping staff as they deliver the best for patients.”
