Huddersfield Community Diagnostic Centre launches first phase at university campus

Published: 22-Jul-2025

Patients referred to Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust can now access diagnostic tests in a new university-based centre

The first phase of the Huddersfield Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) has officially opened within the Daphne Steele Building at the University of Huddersfield.

This opening marks the launch of a healthcare facility located on a UK university campus. This progress follows the opening of the Daphne Steele Building at the University of Huddersfield last year.

The CDC is part of a collaboration between the University and Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust (CHFT), aiming to improve patient access to diagnostic services outside a traditional hospital setting.

Located on the University’s National Health Innovation Campus (NHIC) on Southgate, the facility currently offers cardiorespiratory tests, ultrasound scans, and drop-in phlebotomy services to CHFT-referred patients.

In addition to enhancing patient care, the new CDCs also offer clinical training and placement opportunities for University of Huddersfield students, fostering integration between healthcare education and NHS service delivery

Sarah Shaw, Strategic Lead for Clinical and Wellbeing Services at the university’s Health and Wellbeing Academy, said: “Having this initial phase of the CDC already open in the Daphne Steele Building is very welcome for both the University of Huddersfield and Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust.

“This collaboration supports the aim of CHFT to give patients easier and more efficient access to diagnostic tests. It also offers a rich learning environment for our students that will be of a huge benefit for them.”

A second facility

A second, larger facility, the full Huddersfield Community Diagnostic Centre, is under development next door in the Emily Siddon Building.

Scheduled to open in January 2026, it will provide a comprehensive range of diagnostic services including MRI and CT scans, X-rays, tele-dermatology, and additional cardiorespiratory tests.

Sarah Clenton, Deputy Director of Operations at CHFT, said:  “Once open in January 2026, the new CDC will bring a wide range of diagnostic services closer to our communities.

“Being in the centre of Huddersfield means that our patients have a convenient location for tests such as X-Rays, CT scans and MRIs, as well as other services. The centre will give our patients greater choice, and because we will be able to offer more tests, means people can be diagnosed and treated quicker.”

The Huddersfield CDC complements CHFT’s existing facility at Broad Street Plaza in Halifax, which performs over 1,500 diagnostic tests per week.

Both sites are designed to streamline services by moving diagnostic testing into accessible community settings.
